Polyphase extensional basins: interplay between tectonics and sedimentation in the Neogene Siena-Radicofani Basin (Northern Apennines, Italy)

چکیده
Abstract Rift-basins are the shallow effects of lithosphere-scale extensional processes often producing polyphase faulting. Their sedimentary evolution depends on mutual interplay between tectonics, climate, and eustasy. Estimating role each factor is generally a challenging issue. This paper focused tectono-sedimentary Neogene Siena-Radicofani Basin, structural depression located in inner Northern Apennines. Since Miocene, this basin developed after prolonged first as bowl-shaped depression, later reorganized into half-graben structure due to activation high-angle normal faults Zanclean. At that time contained coeval continental marine settings controlled by faulting caused development local coarse-grained depositional systems. These were investigated to: (i) discriminate influences tectonics climate sedimentation patterns, (ii) provide detailed constraints fault activity. The analysed successions deposited an interval 5.08 4.52 Ma, when climate-induced highstand phase occurred throughout Mediterranean. However, evidence relative sea-level drops registered record, associated with increased accommodation space sediment supply. Such base-level fluctuations not connected changes, suggesting control along margins.

Arid climate 2 . 5 Ma in the Plio - Pleistocene Valdarno Basin ( Northern Apennines , Italy )
Distinctive, eolian-dominated sandy deposits 35 m thick exposed along the SW margin of the Plio-Pleistocene Valdarno Basin in the Northern Apennines, Italy, reflect an unusually arid period in the region. Paleomagnetic investigation and Ar/Ar dating of a tephra layer, 10 m above the eolian sand, suggest that the sand was deposited between about 2.7 and 2.4 Ma. This age is coeval with the global...

متن کاملExtensional basins of the former Soviet Union - - structure, basin formation mechanisms and subsidence history
We review the structure and evolution of a number of Riphean-Phanerozoic rifts and extensional basins within the territory of the former Soviet Union (FSU). Horst-and-graben formation in strong crustal and subcrustal lithosphere layers can explain the multi-trough character of rift systems observed in the Russian platform, the Vilyuy rift, the West Siberian rift system, the Pechora-Kolva rift s...
متن کاملRift basins and supradetachment basins: intracontinental extensional end-members
Two end-members characterize a continuum of continental extensional tectonism: rift settings and highly extended terrains. These different styles result in and are recorded by different extensional basins. Intracontinental rifts (e.g. East Africa, Lake Baikal) usually occur in thermally equilibrated crust of normal thickness. Rift settings commonly display alkali to tholeiitic magmatism, steepl...
